Sleep Apnea Face Masks

When using a CPAP, BiPAP, or ASV/APAP machine, the patient is fitted with a face mask that forms an air-tight seal with the face, which, when pressurized from the attached machine, will allow air to be forced into the patient’s airway, helping to reduce the effects of obstructive sleep apnea. There is a wide variety of masks to choose from, varying in size and fit, as well as several styles of masks that cater to individual needs.

Most sleep apnea face masks are triangular in shape and fit over the nose or the nose and mouth. The face mask is usually secured using straps that strap around the back of the head and the chin to allow for a secure and comfortable wear. These face masks are typical of the treatment, and they come in many varieties and sizes to suit the individual who is purchasing them.

A tight fit with these masks is key, because if the pressure is unable to build up, the effectiveness of the apparatus that is attached is limited and the apneas will go untreated.

The seal can be broken if the straps are too loose, allowing the air to escape, or if the straps are too tight, bending the seals and allowing the mask to depressurize. A mask that doesn’t fit the face well can also have leaks where it fails to meet the contours of the face. The masks do include, however, and intentional “built-in leak” so that the exhaled air may escape the pressurized mask and allow fresh air into the mask.

There are also some other forms of delivery for the pressurized air. One such form is a mask specifically designed to deliver air to the mouth only. This system of delivery requires no headgear, as the only contact points with the patient are with the area around the mouth. However, the mask does require humidification to create a seal.

Another method of delivery is the use of nasal “pillows,” which are small, pliable plastic inserts that are attached to the delivery hose and then inserted into the nostrils. These also require no headgear, and can accommodate glasses as well as large beards and mustaches that may otherwise prevent a seal from forming on the face. Patients also have reported lowered feelings of claustrophobia and a general increase in comfort. Similar to this is a system that resembles nasal cannula, and function similarly to the nasal pillows, but uses large tubing to create the seal.

Maintaining a seal with all of the aforementioned face masks is extremely important to the effectiveness of the machine. There are many factors that can cause a bad seal to form that do not deal directly with the face mask itself. Skin care is very important in creating a good seal, as dry or excessively oily skin will not allow for a good seal to form.

Face masks are a very important part of the treatment of sleep apnea when using a CPAP machine or the like. Most sleep apnea face masks are able to connect to a standard air hose, so compatibility is usually not an issue. When trying different face masks, be sure to check for comfort, usability, and durability to maximize the treatment’s effectiveness.

Sleep Apnea Breathing Mask

When it comes to treating sleep apnea, there are few things as important as the breathing mask that you wear in conjunction with your CPAP, BiPAP, or APAP machine. This is because the comfort of the mask, as well as the functionality of the mask, could make or break the effectiveness of the treatment.

Sleep apnea masks that cause excessive discomfort to the patient may worsen the problem beyond the apneas by causing restless sleep due to irritation caused by the mask. Breathing masks that fit poorly or do not make a proper, airtight seal with the face can also reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Because of this, choosing the correct mask for you is extremely important to the success of your apnea treatment.

For most patients, a sleep apnea breathing mask that covers only the nose is adequate. Held in place with straps that create an airtight seal around the nose, this type of breathing mask is perfect for those who have no difficulties with mouth breathing while sleeping.

However, for those who do have difficulty not breathing through the mouth or keeping the mouth closed while asleep should consider a breathing mask that also covers the mouth.

Almost all of the sleep apnea breathing masks available today have what is called a built in leak, which allows air exchange through a one-way valve on the face of the breathing masks. When the patient exhales, the air is expelled through the valve, ensuring a constant supply of fresh air. Breathing masks usually have a strap that goes under the chin as well to further ensure the mouth stays closed while the patient sleeps. If the face mask makes the patient feel uncomfortable or claustrophobic, however, alternatives exist that are less enclosing.

Nasal pillows are small pliable pieces of plastic that are inserted into the nostrils. Once inserted, they form the seal against the inner walls of the nose. Because of this, there is little need for headgear, although some forms of this type of breathing apparatus come with straps to go under the chin to prevent the mouth from falling open. Because of the distinct lack of headgear, the user may find that it is more comfortable to wear nasal pillows than the traditional breathing mask. However, patients who are administered higher pressures of air should be cautious of using nasal pillows for this very reason, as there is far less security in the seal, which is much easier to break when experiencing higher pressures.

A similar delivery interface closely resembles nasal cannula. The tubing is inserted into the nostrils in a manner that causes a seal to form due to the large diameter of the hosing. Besides the lack of plastic pieces to form the seal, the nasal cannula functions exactly the same as the nasal pillows.

No matter what kind of sleep apnea breathing mask or apparatus you choose, be sure that it is comfortable and functional. Nothing is worse than attempting to use a device that is insufficient to your needs, as the treatment is then rendered ineffective. Be sure to tell your doctor of any complaints you may have with your current breathing mask, and don’t be afraid to try many masks before settling on a permanent solution.

How many times have you heard someone make a cursory mention of your need for beauty sleep and dismissed it as either their half-hearted attempt at being humorous or their mindlessly repeating an old wives tale out of sheer habit? Well I’ve got news for you.

Although increasing the amount of sleep you get each night may not guarantee you a career as a supermodel, it will contribute a great deal to your overall health.

Why do we need sleep?

Sleep is such a crucial component of our lives that most of us spend about 1/3 of our time doing it. It is not just a luxury for those whose schedules aren’t completely cluttered with activities either. Sleeping is vital to brain function and regeneration. Many key physiological events take place during our slumber, not the least of which are allowing the brain to organize and store memories, as well as allowing the body to generate growth hormone.

Ever wonder why babies sleep an average of 16 hours per day? That’s why.

There bodies are going through such rapid transformation and the bulk of the growth hormone produced by our bodies occurs during sleep. It probably wouldn’t be too big a stretch to suggest that hair growth among the sleep deprived is less than those catching enough of the proverbial “Z’s”. Getting an adequate amount of sleep is important for healing. The body’s immune system is at full strength when fully rested, as it is during sleep that the body regenerates and repairs itself. Back to the growth hormone, athletes and bodybuilders know the importance of sleep in allowing inflamed muscles to heal and recover after intense workouts.

How Much Sleep do I need?

I started out talking about wives tales and here is where one finally comes into play. Popular opinion says that adults do not need as much sleep as young people. It turns out that this is not true. While it is no longer as crucial for the average, full-grown adult to make sure that their bodies are maximizing their growth hormone production as it may be for youth and adolescents, getting enough sleep is absolutely imperative for brain function. Unfortunately, with age, the decline of some of our other body functions may have an adverse affect on our ability to sleep as long as was previously possible. Many adults become lighter sleepers due to factors like parenthood, environmental changes, or stress. Our adult bodies are built for an average of 16 waking hours per day. Taking a moment to do the math would subsequently suggest that 8 hours is the target number. The aforementioned afflictions may preclude getting that much sleep in one sitting, but best efforts should be made to squeeze in a power nap or two to make up the difference.

What if I don’t get enough sleep?

So you’re saying, “Big deal. I don’t need much sleep. I’ve got too much to do. I can sleep when I’m dead.” Well, dead is where you may soon be if you continue to play Russian Roulette with sleep deprivation. The National Highway Safety Administration reports that more than 100,000 traffic accidents involve someone who has fallen asleep behind the wheel. People working around heavy machinery or in hyper-alert positions like Air Traffic Control also greatly increase the risk of catastrophe by not getting enough sleep.

Why is this? Well, the brain’s decision making ability and cognitive functions are sharply compromised when it is not rested. It’s ability to retain and process information becomes sharply impaired, as is concentration. And to dispel another myth, drinking coffee doesn’t help either. In fact, the caffeine in coffee may constrict the blood vessels and speed the heart rate, but it also blocks the receptors that let the brown know that it is tired, causing the brain to become even less efficient. The bad news does not stop there. Lack of sleep may trigger the release of stress hormones and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, as well as breast and colon cancer. The hormone melatonin fights the abnormal cell growth that causes some cancers and as you probably guessed, the bulk of melatonin is produced during sleep. Less sleep means less melatonin and thus a reduced ability to fight off cancer. Depression. Irritability. Mood swings. Increased likelihood of mental illness. Do you see how seriously we need to take the business of sleeping?

How can I improve the quality of sleep I get?

Do not despair. The fact that you have continued to read suggests that you are concerned enough to find out if there is indeed any light at the end of this tunnel. Just as with any other thing in your life, you’ve got to commit to putting the work in to improve the situation. Change your sleeping habits by changing the things you do before going to sleep. Develop a ritual that allows your body to unwind before trying to sleep. Here are a few suggestions. Establish relaxing pre-sleep routines. It is important to incorporate time to “wind down” from your daily activities. Minimize light, noise, and temperature extremes in the bedroom. Avoid large meals just before bedtime. Small snacks are not a problem, but large meals keep the digestive system active and can disrupt sleep.

Avoid strenuous exercise within two to three hours of bedtime. Strenuous exercise can elevate body temperature and cause difficulty falling asleep at bedtime. Avoid caffeine or other stimulants within four hours of bedtime. Develop a regular bed time and go to bed at the same time each night Try and wake up without an alarm clock I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to go to sleep. Like I said at the beginning, getting more sleep may not make you look like Halle Berry, but its positive effects may indeed bring out your inner beauty.

Relaxation
